A prescription drug, gabapentin, or Neurontin (which is its brand name), was approved by the FDA in 1994, for the treatment of epilepsy and also mild seizures. Since then, it has been widely used as a treatment for neuropathic pain. The nervous system is usually the target of this type of pain. Occasionally it has been used as a treatment for bipolar disorder, prevention of migraines, and some forms of severe depression that have not responded to other drugs. While this drug is useful in treating a variety of problems, we must also consider the possible side effects of gabapentin.
Vertigo frequently occurs as a side effect when people take gabapentin. Usually this occurs in the early stages of treatment, and diminishes as your body gets used to the medication. A lot of Neurontin users complain that the drug causes excessive sleepiness. It’s wise to avoid driving and using heavy machinery until you see how the prescription effects you.
Peripheral edema is another side effect that people who use Neurontin often experience. Peripheral edema causes the hands and feet to swell, and is quite bothersome. If this condition causes pain, or is not relieved after a few weeks of beginning the treatment with gabapentin, see your doctor immediately.
In the initial studies conducted on rats, carcinomas have developed in some of the rats. While these carcinomas did not negatively impact the rats’ lifespan, further research is needed.
